Nature After School

Outdoor Play and Nature Connection

“It takes time–loose, unstructured dreamtime– to experience nature in a meaningful way. Unless parents are vigilant, such time becomes a scarce resource, not because we intend it to shrink, but because time is consumed by multiple, invisible forces; because our culture currently places so little value on natural play.” –Richard Louv, Author of “Last Child In the Woods”

When I got out of school as a kid, I would stop by home for a quick snack and then head outside to play in the forest with my friends.  We’d play games, explore creeks, climb trees, trade things, pretend we were a tribe and most importantly stay out until our parents called us in for dinner.

Roasting strawberries over a fire made by friction.

My after school programs provide this sense of freedom and adventure, and add to it an experienced guide who shows the kids wilderness skills, teaches naturalist knowledge through play and keeps them safe. Active and creative, they are a great balance to the typical school day spent focusing indoors.
